After a twelve year drought of new music and two reunions, legendary Britpop band PULP have released a new single called ‘Spike Island’. Jarvis Cocker, the bands frontman, also announced that a new album is on the way and will be released on June 6th.

If i had to describe ‘Spike Island’ in one sentence it would be: feels like a classic PULP track with a more pop driven sound.

The songs title is a reference to the famous Stone Roses concert on Spike Island, Widnes in 1990; a concert thought to have sparked the start of the Britpop movement. The exact same movement that PULP rose to fame under. Overall, the song seems to be about how nostalgia can often distort memory. He sings about the confusion and discomfort around the band’s fame, “I was conforming to a cosmic design, I was playing to type”. However, ‘Spike Island’ isn’t just a walk down memory lane. “This time I’ll get it right” Cocker sings, suggesting a new found confidence in their musical return.

Jarvis Cocker confirmed their new album, due out on June 6, 2025, is called ‘More‘. The title feels very apropos for Pulp’s first full length release since We Love Life (2001). The album is produced by James Ford, who also done ‘The Car’ for Arctic Monkeys and ‘Romance’ by Fontaines D.C. It was apparently recorded in just three weeks, which suggests this quick turnaround means the band had been sitting on new music for quite a while. The album also features contributions from Richard Hawley and Jason Buckle with some backing vocals coming from the Eno family.

Jarvis Cocker called this album ‘The best we can do” during an interview with BBC Radio 6 and that is enough to make it one of the most anticipated albums of the year for me.

I’m personally very happy to be in a version of the world we we are getting MORE, new PULP.
